The defect tends to be isolated, asymptomatic, female predominant, and self-epithelialized at 2 years of age. Early diagnosis of this congenital defect at birth is important to avoid misdiagnosis at a later age for trauma, dermatitis, or even sexual abuse and unnecessary aggressive surgical or medical intervention.
